Roseau in History- Capital of Dominica

Roseau is the capital and largest city of Dominica. Its population is 14,847 (2001 census),[1] It is a small and compact urban settlement, located within the Saint George par ish and surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Roseau River and Morne Bruce. Built on the site of the ancient Kalinago Indian village of Sairi, it is the oldest and most important urban settlement on the island. 2010

It is located on the west (lee ward) coast of Dominica, and is a combination of modern and colonial (French Style) architecture. 2010

Some exports include bananas, bay oil, vegetables, grapefruit, oranges and cocoa, servises. 2010

The city of Roseau sits on an alluvial fan formed hundreds of years ago as the river after which it was named meandered across the area from what is now known as Newtown to its current location. Over the last two thousand years Amerindians migrating through the islands settled the area attracted by the nearby river. With the arrival of the Europeans on the island in the 16th and 17th centuries, a small settlement was established by the French who in their tradition of naming places after what they found there named the settlement with their name for the river reeds which grew along the river banks. A plan was created for the settlement which mirrored examples in France where streets extended from a central point at what is today the Old Market and extended out to the rest of the settlement. 2010

Conflict raged between the French and the British over the area on several occasions. Finally the British gained a stronghold and by the late 18th and early 19th centuries set out plans for the city which included fortificat ions and government structures, the grid road street system and blocks and new urban areas to the north and south known today as Potter's Ville and Newtown. Goodwill was established in the 1950s and Bath Estate in the early 1980s. Since then several new semi-urban settlements — such as Stock Farm, Castle Comfort and Wall House — have been constructed around the existing ones. Some older settlements like Fond Cole and Canefield nowadays belong also to the semi-urban area that lies around Roseau. 2010

The French influence can still be seen today, however, in its architecture, and crooked streets which extend from the Old Market Plaza. Examples of the English influence is also evident in architecture and street names. 2010

 Kristen Stewart Doesn't Hate Fame

She might rarely been seen with a smile on her face, but that doesn't mean Kristen Stewart hates being a celebrity as much as some think. 2010

While promoting the movie The Yellow Handkerchief, Stewart admitted that she can get sick of the paparazzi invading her personal space, but she also understands it comes with the territory. 201

"I can't say I don't want that, because people take it to the extreme and say that I hate it," Kristen told E! News. "No, no, no! That's not true." 2010

If it's taken Stewart longer than most to adjust, it's because she never saw any of this coming. When she first signed on for Twilight, the actress says she couldn't have predicted that she and Robert Pattinson would cover every tabloid on the market. 2010

"We didn't even know we were going to make a second one. We were just like, 'It's really cool. It's different and we've never seen a love story like this.' I thought it would just be another cool Catherine Hardwicke movie." 2010

It was... and then some! 2010

Djibouti in History- Capital of Djibouti

Djibouti was originally inhabited by nomadic tribes, the main ones being the Afars and the Issas, who are strongly linked to Ethiopia and Somalia respectively. In 1862, the French signed a treaty with the Afar leaders, giving them land on the north coast. During the rest of the 19th century, Djibouti gradually became more firmly associated with France. In 1915, a railway was completed from Djibouti to Addis Ababa. In 1945, French Somaliland (as the area was called) was declared an ‘overseas territory’ and in 1967, it became the French territory of the ‘Afars and Issas’. Tensions between the Afars, 2010

the Issas and the French led to sporadic outbreaks of violence during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1977, the French agreed to withdraw and the country achieved independence with Hassan Gouled Aptidon as president. A sizeable French military presence in the country guaranteed the Gouled regime, which was threatened by organized opposition – both inside the country and abroad – and by the instability of its larger neighbors, Somalia and Ethiopia and, later on, Eritrea. In 1991, Afar tribesmen launched a major assault on the regime, under the rubric of Le Front pour la Restauration de l’Unité et la Démocratie (FRUD). After two years of fighting, the rebellion was put down by the government with French support and, in May 1993, Gouled was re-elected as president. After a major split within FRUD, part of the movement formed an alliance with the government and the ruling Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progrès (RPP). The current premier, who took office in 2001, is Mohammed Dileita. Gouled resigned in the spring of 1999 after 22 years in office and shortly before the most recent presidential election. Gouled’s nephew and former security chief, Ismail Omar Guelleh, replaced him and comfortably won the April 1999 poll. Apart from a failed coup in December 2000 – orchestrated by a disaffected former police chief – Djibouti has since enjoyed a welcome spell of domestic calm. The most recent national assembly poll in April 2003 returned the ruling coalition once again with Dileita still at the head of the government. In April 2005, Guelleh won a second-term in a one-man presidential election. In his campaign he promised to deal with poverty and reduce the country's dependence on imported food. Guellah is due to step down at the end of this term. Abroad, Djibouti has used its small, independent status to play the role of honest broker in regional disputes. It played a central role in the ceasefire agreed between Ethiopia and Eritrea and, in conjunction with Yemen and Sudan, it has worked to bring about a long-term political solution in Somalia. In the latter case, its efforts have been complicated by difficulties with the regime in ‘Somaliland’, the northern part of Somalia which borders directly on Djibouti and is effectively an independent state (see Somalia). Recently, the port of Djibouti has been heavily used by Western naval vessels operating in the Gulf. 2010

Copenhagen in History- Capital of Denmark

Copenhagen was founded in 1167 by tough-as-nails Bishop Absalon, who erected a fortress on Slotsholmen Island, fortifying a small and previously unprotected harbourside village. 2010

After the fortification was built, the harbourside village grew in importance and took on the name Kømandshavn (Merchant’s Port), which was later condensed to København. Absalon’s fortress stood until 1369, when it was destroyed in an attack on the town by the powerful Hanseatic states. 2010

In 1376 construction began on a new Slotsholmen fortification, Copenhagen Castle, and in 1416 King Erik of Pomerania took up residence at the site, marking the beginning of Copenhagen’s role as the capital of Denmark. 2010

Still, it wasn’t until the reign of Christian IV, in the first half of the 17th century, that the city was endowed with much of its splendour. A lofty Renaissance designer, Christian IV began an ambitious construction scheme, building two new castles and many other grand edifices, including the Rundetårn observatory and the glorious Børsen, Europe’s first stock exchange. 2010

In 1711 the bubonic plague reduced Copenhagen’s population of 60, 000 by one-third. Tragic fires, one in 1728 and the other in 1795, wiped out large tracts of the city, including most of its timber buildings. However, the worst scourge in the city’s history is generally regarded as the unprovoked British bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807, during the Napoleonic Wars. The attack targeted the heart of the city, inflicting numerous civilian casualties and setting hundreds of homes, churches and public buildings on fire. 2010

Copenhagen flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries, expanding beyond its old city walls and establishing a reputation as a centre for culture, liberal politics and the arts. Dark times were experienced with the Nazi occupation of the city during WWII, although the city managed to emerge relatively unscathed. 2010

During the war and in the economic depression that had preceded it, many Copenhagen neighbourhoods had deteriorated into slums. In 1948 an ambitious urban renewal policy called the ‘Finger Plan’ was adopted; this redeveloped much of the city, creating new housing projects interspaced with green areas of parks and recreational facilities that spread out like fingers from the city centre. 2010

A rebellion by young people disillusioned with growing materialism, the nuclear arms race and an authoritarian educational system took hold in Copenhagen in the 1960s. Student protests broke out on the university campus and squatters occupied vacant buildings around the city. It came to a head in 1971 when protesters tore down the fence of an abandoned military camp at the east side of Christianshavn and began an occupation of the 41-hectare site, naming this settlement Christiania. 2010

In the new millennium, the future looks uncertain, as riot police patrol Christiania and the city talks of taking back the land from the squatters. The only event that seemed capable of taking this topic off lips and front pages was the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik to Australian Mary Donaldson in May 2004. They have since had two children, a boy and a girl. 2010
